Ultimate odds & ends: unposted HK photos
As I depart Hong Kong (for now), please enjoy my smorgasbord of random pics! Continue reading
Packing
Today I practiced packing. Tiger Airlines to Singapore is allowing less than Delta to Hong Kong, so I had to pare down. Here’s everything I’ve got with me now:
I liked cow stomach better when I thought it was squid
After several bites, I said something about the squid and Queenie said, “That’s not squid.” I can’t explain how it suddenly tasted bad – like slightly-spoiled meat – but it did. Continue reading
Reader request: Let’s Go Get Lunch
If you have 7 minutes, you can go to lunch with me by clicking here.
NYC or HK?
How quickly can you to tell which pics below are NYC and which are HK? Without any clue of what Hong Kong looked like, I took some pics in NYC before I left that I thought could look like HK. Then I recently did the same here in HK. View the original post (the NYC … Continue reading
Friday Odds & Ends (videos galore!)
Finally finished an involved language project with Jessica. I almost bit off more than I had energy to chew with this. In Cantonese, it’s not enough to jot down how a word sounds; you need to have the intonation burned into your brain. I looked all over the internet for the kind of Cantonese video I … Continue reading
Monkey Hill (video!)
Today was the day! Jessica and I ventured out to Monkey Hill! All my video can be seen in under 5 minutes here. It was much like I’d imagined; there were monkeys on the loose everywhere. They were doing a lot more hanging out and less patting people down for food than I anticipated. Oddly, … Continue reading
Mexican Food in Hong Kong: el Taco Loco
The term “Tex-Mex” would be more accurate here, but I’ll take what I can get. While I won’t be sitting down to chiles rellenos or tamales anytime soon, Taco Loco filled the Tex-Mex shaped hole in my belly last night. I found El Taco Loco at #4 on this list, located close by, at the … Continue reading
Hong Kong Healthcare: a firsthand report
The ankle I sprained 4 months ago swells up all like an old lady’s every time I walk on it for over an hour. (Good luck being in Hong Kong and not walking everywhere!) A know-nothing friend proclaimed “it’s just water!” STFU, friend. That makes no sense. Even if it is “just water”, a pint … Continue reading
It’s Caturday!
On my way back from F.A.B. brunch with Jessica this morning, I made some new furry friends.
Wednesday odds & ends
Got up early to head out to Cyberport to visit this ad agency on my short (very short, actually) list:
Laksa
In her interview, Chip mentioned “laksa” as something she misses most about Singapore. If you’re like me, you thought, “(Latka?) No wait…what’s ‘laksa’?”
Gear / Luggage: How I decided on my Eagle Creek bag.
I love the idea of light, “one bag” travel and over the past few months, have enjoyed blogs dedicated to carry-on-only travel like 1bag1world and especially onebag.com. I was almost sold on the Red Oxx “Air Boss”, but eventually concluded that a packed-mostly-full Air Boss would just be too heavy to have hanging on one side … Continue reading
“Why Hong Kong?!”
You’d think I’d be used to this question, as many times as I’ve gotten it. There’s no single, easy-to-articulate reason why I’m going to HK, other than because I want to. But that’s a cop-out, so I’ll try a top 5 reasons list. 1. To find out what it’s like. I’ve never been to HK and know … Continue reading
Drive to Austin. Fly to LGA. Fly to HKG.
The plan in 7 easy steps: 1. Leave Columbus. Everything I own in the rental car. 2. Stop near Nashville to see Dave Ramsey. 3. Spend the night at Highland Place B&B in Jackson, TN. 4. Drive to Dallas to see my dear friend, Robin. 5. Drive to Austin. Put stuff in storage. Visit my … Continue reading
