I knew it wasn’t my imagination. This comedian offers one explanation around 3:30. The N-word is pretty clear in a pre-recorded announcement on the Airport Express Train, so maybe in Cantonese (what they speak here) maybe it’s something other than the Mandarin filler-word. (?)
Pretty distracting, though. And makes me wonder about awkward stateside moments involving hapless Chinese visitors.
